Samsung Trucks Use Cameras to Improve Highway Safety

Posted By Schneider Overett || 24-Jun-2015

Samsung, a South Korean company and leader in the technology industry, hopes to improve roadway safety with “see through” 18-wheeler trucks. On the back of each truck, a large screen will display an image of the truck driver’s vantage point, making it easier for motorists to see what’s ahead.

If you’ve ever driven on a two-lane highway, you know how frustrating it is to get stuck behind a slow moving semi-truck. Even more aggravating is the fact you can’t actually see around the truck to safely pass it.

Samsung’s new “clear truck” technology is designed to eliminate this problem for drivers. With a full view of the road ahead, drivers will know if oncoming traffic blocks them from moving around the semi-truck.

According to news reports, the cameras include night vision capabilities. Currently a prototype of the truck demonstrates how later versions of the vehicle will work.

In a recent blog post on Samsung Tomorrow, Samsung said, “This allows drivers to have a better view when deciding whether it is safe to overtake. Another advantage of the Safety Truck is that it may reduce the risk of accidents caused by sudden braking or animals crossing the road.”

The Future of Roadway Safety

Currently, Samsung has a functional prototype, although the vehicle is not in operation. Initial testing seemed to indicate that the see-through truck concept could save many lives.

In order to start using the trucks, Samsung’s next step is to perform adequate testing to make sure the vehicles comply with government standards. With the help of non-government organizations, Samsung hopes to acquire the right approval and required permits to actually implement the new design.
